HISTORY
The ancient name of Gönen was Asepsus. Later, because of thermal spring water, people called Gönen as Artemea. Gönen was under Byzantium sovereignity until 1334 when a Turkish Sultan, namely Orhan Gazi, occupied the town. Famous Turkish traveller Evliya Çelebi mentions Gönen in its book called Seyahatname that Gönen is the town of Mihaliç(a king of Bursa) and it consists of buildings having red tiles.
It is known that the kings of Bursa used to come to Gönen to spend their holidays and to bath in healing thermal water. The works, written articles and the statutes found in Gönen by the archeologists reveal that the town is an ancient historical habitat. It is also known that the bridge of Alexander was built in 800 BC by Alexander the Great while he was going to Persian War. The remains of Alacaoluk and Babayaka Castles are some of the important historical works, too. Moreover, there is a Byzantium Mosaic Museum inside the Thermal Resort.
